About Jackson, Mississippi - Jackson was a small town throughout the majority of the 19th century. The city was much smaller than other cities that were located along the Mississippi River. Even though the city was the state capital, there were only 1,800 residents in the census of 1850 and only 8,000 in 1900. Over the next 50 years, the population grew to over 70,000.
